Online Dating Scams

Published May 11, 2015

Always let common sense prevail when contacting someone from an online dating site. Even people with great online dating profiles can be up to no good. Here are some tips to spot a scammer:

  1. If the online dater says they love you in your first or second communication, they may be playing to your emotions to get something from you. Even if you are a hopeless romantic you need to err on the side of caution if someone tells you that you are the person of their dreams based on your online dating profile and picture.
  2. Another red flag that you are talking to a scammer is if an online dater asks you for money. RUN, RUN, RUN!! It is never okay for anyone to ask for money for any reason. Don’t let someone guilt you into sending money because they recently lost their job, they were robbed, or they are stuck in a foreign country.
  3. Beware of the online dater that will never gradually increase communication efforts.
    1. Example 1: The person will always email you but will never call you.
    2. Example 2: The person will talk to you on the phone but will never video chat with you.
    3. Example 3: The person will talk on the phone but will never meet in person.

Sometimes people want to slowly and gradually get to know you. If after 6 months a person a person still refuses to call, video chat, are meet safely in public, you may be getting scammed.

  1. Beware of a person that only has a few pictures of themselves. We are not suggesting that you or the other dater needs to have a modeling portfolio, but in this day and age, almost every cell phone is capable of taking pictures. There is no reason for someone not to be able to share multiple pictures. Be especially concerned if they will not video chat or meet in person.
